This morning’s verse continues to talk about the consequences of disobedience.
It is important to assess what our motive is in obeying the Lord. Are we obeying so that we can get something? The world, and sometimes even the Church, may lead us to place more value on promotion, increase, growth, influence, honor, etc., and may consider them as evidence of our hard, faithful labor, even obedience to the Lord. Although He promises that our obedience to the Lord leads us to receive these blessings, it is not our part to bring about them. Our role is to obey, entrusting the Lord with the blessings part. (See Deuteronomy 28:2)
How do we obey? We may have fought to deal with the offense we receive from others in relationships. These offenses hinder us from seeing what truly matters. (See Proverbs 19:11) Have we sought to think of the deeper motive of the person who acted rudely? (See 1 Corinthians 13:7) Have we considered thanking them for the positive things they have done? (See Philippians 4:8, 1 Thessalonians 5:18) These are some of the areas of character growth we can work on. These are the areas that have eternal value. We can choose to grow and prosper in character that we cannot see but has eternal value. (See 2 Corinthians 4:18)
Today, let us assess why we are obeying. We must prioritize character growth over other areas in terms of obedience because that is what truly matters eternally. And before we even know it, the blessings that He promises in the Scriptures will chase and overtake us.
May the Lord continue to richly bless you!
